Survey of Pesticide Use in MD Schools
The following are the results of an MPN 1999 survey of
outdoor pesticides used on public school grounds of 15 out of Maryland's 24 school districts:
- 67% of the counties reported using Round Up, which can cause eye
irritation, blurry vision, elevated blood pressure, chest pains, nausea,
diarhhea, respiratory reactions and skin reactions.
- 53% of school districts reported using Turflon or Garlon. Garlon can cause
permanent impairment of vision.
- 53% reported using Surflan, a pssible human carcinogen according to US EPA.
- 40% reported using 2,4-D, an endocrine disruptor, which can effect adverse
health outcomes, causing cancer, infertility and changes in sexual traits.
- 7% reported using Diazinon which is a nervous system poison.
