MISSION

The Maryland Pesticide Network

(MPN) is a grassroots coalition of organizations in Maryland dedicated to protecting the public and the environment from toxic pesticides and promoting healthy alternatives.  Founded in 1994, MPN's diverse membership includes health care provider, consumer, environmental, parent, labor, agricultural and religious organizations.

The impact of pesticide use is a complex issue about which we will never have perfect knowledge. Therefore, the coalition's work is based on the precautionary principle, which states: "When an activity raises threats of harm to human health or their environment, precautionary measures should be taken even if some cause and effect relationships are not fully established scientifically."

The Maryland Pesticide Network holds that:

  • Involuntary exposure to pesticides is a human rights issue.
  • Pesticides are not benign in their impact on human health and the environment.
  • Safer alternatives and strategies exist to protect human health, pets, wildlife and the environment.
  • MPN's work and decisions are grounded in scientific (peer-reviewed) findings.

The Maryland Pesticide Network:

  • Promotes the adoption of pest management practices that are safe for children, adults, and our environment.
  • Promotes right-to-know policies such as pre-notification of pesticide exposures and full disclosure of potential adverse health and environmental effects.
  • Educates the general public, policy makers, health care, environmental health and public health professionals about the hazards of pesticide exposure and safer alternatives.
  • Promotes programs and policies that reduce or eliminate reliance on pesticides.
  • Supports follow through on Maryland's 1998 and 1999 Integrated Pest Management in Public Schools laws.
  • Works collaboratively with local, state and federal agencies and private organizations to promote the above objectives.
